Introduction

Hello <<name>>, thank you for helping us improve our product. Our goal is to create a useful product that is easy to use and for that we need your help. Here in a moment I’m going to ask you to attempt to use our new tool to do some common tasks. This is in-development work and there are some unfinished areas of the site. There are a few problems we already know about, and there are some problems we don’t know about.

While you’re using the tool, I’d love for you to think out-loud. Let me know what you like and dislike. Tell me why you’re doing things and what you expect to happen. If there are any surprises or unexpected events, let me know that too.

I’m sure that you will have questions, but I want you to behave as if I’m not here. Feel free to ask me questions, but I’m going to hold off answering them or helping you until the end of the test. Are there any questions before we begin? [wait for responses] Okay, let’s proceed.

Tasks

Launch the app

Before you can use the app you need to create an account. Do you prefer to create an account using your e-mail address or do you prefer to use social media to login, such as Facebook?

Why?

Thanks. The “create account” feature is coming, so for now just hit the sign-up button or the login with facebook button. They will just log you in automatically as our test user.

Using this app, what’s the lowest price for fuel in the area?

On a scale of 1 to 5, where one is very easy and five is very difficult, how easy or difficult was for you to find this result?

What’s the closest place to find fuel near you?

On a scale of 1 to 5, where one is very easy and five is very difficult, how easy or difficult was for you to find this result?

There are two ways to view this data, the map view and the list view. Which would you prefer to be the default view? Can you tell me more about why you answered that way?

There is a Shell station. If we added the ability to mark that station as your favorite, how would you expect to be able to do that?

We’re thinking about sending alerts when fuel prices go up or down.  Would type of alert would you prefer: to get an alert if fuel prices go up, if they go down, or is this a feature you wouldn’t use? Can you tell me more about why you answered that way?

In the list view the rows have different colors. What do you think the colors might mean?

Wrap-up

Thanks again, this feedback has been very helpful and I can already see how we’ll be able to take action on some of the issues we saw during this session.

We have a short survey, it should only take a moment to fill out. Feel free to give honest feedback, we value both praise and criticism. [give the exit survey]
